Powerline Technician

Power line technicians construct, operate, maintain and repair overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution systems. They erect and maintain steel, wood, fiberglass, laminate and concrete poles, structures and other related hardware. They install, maintain and repair overhead and underground powerlines and cables, and other associated equipment such as insulators, conductors, lightning arrestors, switches, metering systems, transformers and lighting systems. They splice and terminate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution and transmission networks. In some jurisdictions, power line technicians may also install underwater cables and install/transfer communication cables. Power line technicians are employed by electric power generation, transmission or distribution companies, electrical contractors and public utility commissions. In larger utilities, power line technicians may also specialize in one of the following areas: transmission lines, overhead or underground distribution systems, communication networks and electrical power stations.

Power Line Technician Apprenticeship Level 1-3 Challenge Exam Refresher Course

The term of apprenticeship for a power line technician is three years that includes on-the-job training and technical training. Out of these 3 levels , some levels of apprenticeship may or may not be challenge-able, depending on the province. We offer 4o hour refresher courses to prepare for challenge level exams.

Power Line Technician IP (Inter-Provincial) Red Seal Challenge Exam Refresher Course

Once power line technicians have worked in their field for a requisite number of hours (requirements must be verified through the provincial apprenticeship board) then they may wish to write the provincially administered exam for IP Red Seal for Power Line Technicians, which will qualify him/her to work anywhere in Canada. For qualified candidates (approved by apprenticeship board), we offer a 40-hour refresher course that will prepare them to challenge the Inter-Provincial Red Seal examination. Information pertaining to the eligibility requirements for challenging level exams or Inter-Provincial (IP) Red Seal exam can be found by calling local apprenticeship board office in the province or territory where the candidate resides.
